At Summer Island Maldives, we believe that paradise isn’t just a place. It’s a responsibility.
Nestled within the heart of a delicate ecosystem, our island is not only a sanctuary for guests seeking barefoot bliss, but also a living testament to how we can thrive in harmony with nature. Here are just some of the ways we’re making a difference:
Blue Lagoon
In August 2018, Summer Island made history by installing the world’s largest 3D printed coral reef just off our main jetty. Featured in the Guinness World Records in 2021, this pioneering project by Alex Goad of Reef Design Lab was designed to test the potential for large-scale reef restoration in response to rising ocean temperatures. Young corals from our Blue Lagoon nursery were transplanted into this artificial reef, and the results have been inspiring. Today, the reef teems with life and serves as a thriving underwater habitat for countless marine species.Phasing Out Single-Use Plastic
Plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to our oceans – and we’re doing everything we can to fight it. Summer Island has phased out single-use plastics across the island, replacing them with sustainable alternatives:- In all guest rooms and restaurants, glass water bottles filled with fresh water from our own Reverse Osmosis plant have replaced plastic ones.
- At the bars, recyclable cans have taken the place of plastic soft drink bottles.
- In our boutique, cloth bags have replaced plastic ones.
- Even our boat trips now feature reusable glass bottles fitted with mini ‘Summer Island wetsuits’ to prevent breakage and reduce waste.
